The formation of an anti-Western axis that includes China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea has become the most significant challenge for the West in decades.
This opinion was expressed in an interview with The Times by former high-ranking U.S. military official, General Jack Keane. He emphasized that these countries have united against Western nations and view the U.S. as a weakened force on the international stage.
According to Keane, this new threat requires a swift and decisive response from the upcoming administration of President Donald Trump. He noted that significant changes in U.S. defense strategy will be necessary during his tenure, as well as a reevaluation of security policy to restore confidence in the strength of the United States. The general particularly highlighted the urgent need for changes within the U.S. Department of Defense.
"According to our assessment, the challenges facing the Department of Defense are more serious than at any point in the last eighty years. Over the past four years, we have not increased our defense budget due to inflation. Under Biden, it has remained unchanged. This has been irresponsible and reckless," Keane emphasized.
He added that to strengthen the U.S. military, it is essential to accelerate the procurement of the latest weapons, particularly drones, to address modern threats.
The general also pointed to Ukraine's successes:
"Again, look at Ukraine. They have managed to inflict significant damage on the Russian fleet simply by developing and deploying weapons such as underwater drones, and they did this in a very short time. We need to purchase weapon systems in large quantities. We cannot wait for years."
