At the same time, Trump did not agree to the security guarantees for Kyiv that European allies are demanding, reports Politeka.net.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Starmer, in an effort to involve the U.S. in peace initiatives, approached Trump with a proposal for an active American role in the conflict resolution process. However, Trump remained firm, stating that he is only willing to discuss such steps once a ceasefire agreement has been reached between the parties.
"I am confident that if we reach an agreement, it will be adhered to," Trump noted, adding that his strategy is based on the principle of "trust but verify."
Interestingly, Trump also softened his previously harsh statements regarding Ukraine. He mentioned that he "cannot believe" he once called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a "dictator," and promised to help Kyiv regain more of its territories, according to Politeka.
According to The Wall Street Journal, this change in tone could be an important step ahead of Trump's upcoming meeting with Zelensky. At the same time, Starmer was able to improve the somber sentiments between the U.S. and European capitals due to differing views on ending the war in Ukraine.
