Europe needs to secure its "strategic autonomy" from the USA, reports Politeka.net.

This statement was made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The ideas expressed by Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron are gaining increasing traction among European leaders. They argue that Europe must enhance its military capabilities to reduce reliance on American assistance.

In his article, The Telegraph's commentator David Aks elaborated on possible steps to achieve this autonomy. He noted that Europe will require an investment of hundreds of billions of dollars into new technologies and military capabilities, particularly in aviation, satellite systems, electronic warfare equipment, and other critical components.

According to Aks, Europeans already possess enough fighter jets, submarines, aircraft carriers, and other military vessels to match their capabilities with Russia. However, they lack "enablers" – specialized forces that facilitate the execution of complex tasks, Politeka reports.

Specifically, this includes spy planes, air refuelers, and satellites that enable more effective military operations over long distances.

Aks also highlights the space advantage of the United States, which has over 5,000 satellites, while Europe has only around 1,600. To achieve strategic autonomy, Europe needs to invest in modernizing its military technologies, including satellites, surveillance aircraft, and other resources.
