Trump aims to leave his mark in history as a "great peacemaker".
The Atlantic magazine explores a potential scenario for ending the war in Ukraine following Donald Trump's return to power.
Despite his previous admiration for Vladimir Putin, Trump has shifted his stance. The ongoing war in Ukraine, now in its third year, has exposed vulnerabilities in the Russian regime: enormous human and technical losses, economic decline, and a reduction in the Kremlin's strategic influence. Putin no longer appears as triumphant as he did at the onset of the conflict. This prompts Trump to reevaluate his policies and seek new avenues for conflict resolution.
Plans that could be implemented under President Trump suggest that Ukraine will receive security guarantees, although its NATO membership will be postponed until it fully regains its ability to integrate into the alliance. This could serve as a temporary compromise while the country prepares for membership. Additionally, a significant reconstruction of Ukraine is anticipated, with funding potentially provided by Europe through frozen assets.
Trump may also facilitate the presence of international military units in Ukraine – from Poland, Britain, France, and others, totaling up to 100,000 troops. This would create additional security guarantees for the country and strengthen its position. At the same time, an important aspect will be the enhancement of sanctions against Russia, particularly concerning large companies like Gazprom.
"The scenario in which Trump, Europe, and the U.S. unite around Ukraine remains complex yet feasible," the publication states. "This process will require Europe’s resolve, the U.S. leadership, and Russia's readiness to accept defeat, even if Putin will have to present it as a victory," the article notes.
