Negotiations regarding a potential "freeze" of the war in Ukraine could put an end to hostilities, but the proposed plan revealed by The Telegraph raises significant concerns, according to Politeka.net.
According to this plan, Ukraine would lose 20% of its territory to Russia, and peace would be guaranteed only by Putin's word and multinational forces – without the involvement of the United States. Meanwhile, neither Washington nor NATO would commit to protecting Ukraine in the event of a new invasion.
Shock in Europe and diplomatic maneuvers
One British military official, upon learning of this plan, referred to its initiators as "bastards."
European leaders were stunned not only by its content but also by the fact that Trump and Putin discussed the agreement without consulting their allies.
President Vladimir Zelensky's meeting with U.S. Vice President JD Vance occurred late – a decision had already been made without Kyiv's input.
What could peace look like?
Pentagon Chief Pete Hegset stated that returning Ukraine to its 2014 borders is unrealistic. The occupied territories remain under Russian control, and the front line will be frozen.
Both sides should encourage an escalation of hostilities to occupy more territory before negotiations. Journalists speculate that Ukraine may offer territorial exchanges, but the Kremlin will still acquire 20% of Ukrainian land, reports Politeka.
Security risks and NATO's role
Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen estimated that 50,000 to 100,000 peacekeepers would be needed to control the line of demarcation. Meanwhile, there are doubts in London about the necessity of providing them.
Trump has yet to propose a mechanism to prevent a new war. Military analysts note that the U.S. could provide air cover for peacekeepers in exchange for access to Ukrainian resources.
The front remains a reality
Despite diplomatic maneuvers, nothing has changed on the battlefield.
“In Toretsk, the enemy continues to attack, we continue to respond, and when the Russians amass forces, it will start again,” says a Ukrainian soldier.
