German politicians Olaf Scholz and Friedrich Merz are utilizing the war in Ukraine as a component of their election strategy ahead of the upcoming Bundestag elections on February 23, 2025.
As noted by Der Spiegel, the rivalry between them over whose policy towards Ukraine is superior has devolved into a series of mutual accusations, rather than providing clear answers regarding Germany's forthcoming actions.
Analysts believe that the outcome of the war in Ukraine will be a decisive factor for the security of Germany and Europe for decades to come. This is why German citizens want to understand the strategy that future leaders of the country will adopt regarding Ukraine. However, instead of clearly articulating their positions, Scholz and Merz have become entangled in political disputes. Chancellor Scholz takes pride in denying Ukraine the supply of cruise missiles, while Merz, the candidate from CDU/CSU, is trying to demonstrate a greater willingness to assist Kyiv.
But, as the publication points out, Ukraine genuinely requires air defense systems, ammunition, and investments in the defense industry, rather than debates about missiles. According to Spiegel, Germany needs to clearly define what kind of assistance it can provide to help bring an end to the war, particularly through arms supplies and the potential deployment of peacekeeping forces.
However, both politicians have so far evaded a definitive stance on the deployment of German troops. Scholz stated that this is currently "impossible," while Merz clarified that this issue is "not on the agenda for now." Such vague statements raise concerns and distrust among voters, as citizens seek clear and decisive answers from those who aspire to lead the country.
