Following the defeat in the 2023 parliamentary elections and a series of scandals and financial difficulties, the party views Trump's triumph as an opportunity to regain voter trust ahead of the 2024 presidential elections.
As noted by Politico, Trump's presidency coincided with the years of dominance of the "Law and Justice" party in Polish politics. In 2018, the party even proposed the creation of a military base named "Fort Trump" as a symbol of strong Polish-American ties. The warm relationship between Trump and Polish President Andrzej Duda, who supports the "Law and Justice" party, further strengthened this alliance.
Trump's return to the White House has sparked joy among party members. During a session of the Polish parliament, its members cheered, chanting the name of the new U.S. president. At the same time, Donald Trump stated in an interview: "No one has done more for the Polish people than I have."
The "Law and Justice" party hopes to leverage military and security issues as a key part of their election campaign. After all, Poland, which spends the most on defense among NATO countries as a share of GDP, continues to emphasize the importance of American support amid the war in Ukraine.
Mariusz Błaszczak, a party official, even urged Prime Minister Donald Tusk to resign following Trump's victory, claiming that Germany cannot guarantee Poland's security, unlike the U.S.
At the same time, Tusk, representing the liberal opposition, is skeptical of Trump and emphasizes that Poland's future should be determined by Polish voters, not American politics. He refrained from harsh comments but acknowledged that Trump's return poses challenges for Europe.
