Donald Trump is preparing to begin his second term as President of the United States, but the world in which he will operate has become more complex.
According to The Washington Post, one of the main challenges Trump may face is the war in Ukraine. His promises to "make peace in one day" are met with increasing skepticism amid Russia's aggressive demands. European allies are concerned that in pursuit of a peace agreement, Trump may make concessions regarding Ukrainian sovereignty.
At the same time, Trump, who previously criticized NATO for its lack of funding, may now encounter diminished trust from European allies. The situation is further complicated by destabilization in the Middle East due to events in Iran, Syria, and Gaza. Modern autocrats have become less inclined to engage in short-term deals.
Another challenge for Trump will be the new geopolitical bloc forming around Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea. Tensions with Beijing and Pyongyang will add further difficulties to Trump's foreign policy actions. The newly elected U.S. president may attempt to restore diplomatic ties with Putin, but as the publication notes, the Russian leader has become less accommodating. As for China and North Korea, their leaders already have experience dealing with Trump, and now their strategies may create additional obstacles.
Analysts note that Trump is much better prepared to fulfill his foreign policy promises in his second term. However, in an increasingly dangerous world, there will be little room for vanity.
