The Russian dictator Putin is prepared to do everything possible to achieve a "high-profile" meeting with Trump, which would strengthen his position both domestically and on the international stage.

This is stated by David Kirichenko, an associate research fellow at the Henry Jackson Society, in an article for The Hill.

"Above all, Putin desires that Trump assist him in restoring his status on the global stage. To this end, the Russian leader has been carefully flattering Trump, laying the groundwork for a high-profile meeting that could bolster his standing both at home and abroad," he notes.

Putin understands well that his economy is in a state of crisis, and even the largest concessions from the West may not prevent economic collapse. Therefore, according to the analyst, he is trying to approach negotiations with Trump as cautiously as possible, steering clear of provocations that could lead to new sanctions against Russia. At the same time, he is ready to negotiate not with Ukraine, but directly with the U.S., hoping that Trump will be willing to support his political goals.

"First and foremost, Putin craves a direct summit with the U.S., excluding Ukraine, to reinforce his narrative of Russia as a global superpower. Such negotiations would end his isolation, affirm his claims to influence over Ukraine, and satisfy his desire to project Russia as an imperialist state that deserves respect on the world stage," writes Kirichenko.

The expert also notes the contrast between Trump’s approach and that of his predecessor, Joe Biden. During his presidency, Biden adhered to the principle of "Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine," aiming to prioritize Ukrainian independence in any peace process. Trump may be inclined to reach an agreement that serves U.S. political interests more than necessarily considering the sovereignty and security of Ukraine.
