Following Kamala Harris's defeat in the presidential elections and the news of Donald Trump's return to the presidency, Democrats are actively searching for young leaders who could take the helm of the party.
As reported by The Guardian, the older generation of Democrats, represented by Biden (82 years old) and Nancy Pelosi (84 years old), has come under fire for a "stagnation in leadership." Even in the Senate, Democrats have lost their majority, prompting thoughts of a new wave of leaders. The focus is on figures capable of enhancing the party's competitiveness and restoring voter trust.
Among the promising candidates are young governors, notably Josh Shapiro from Pennsylvania (51 years old), Gretchen Whitmer from Michigan (53 years old), and Andy Beshear from Kentucky (46 years old). Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who is only 42, is also taking an active stance.
"It’s a huge problem in the Democratic Party that we have such a rigid leadership class that it needs to become a crisis before they step down," Politico quotes one Democrat.
The search for a new chair of the Democratic National Committee also indicates the necessity for a generational shift. Candidates mentioned include Ken Martin (51 years old) and Ben Wikler (43 years old), along with a representative of the younger generation, 38-year-old Mallory McMorrow, who has expressed her willingness to run if she receives support.
Meanwhile, Biden, while attending summits in Brazil and Peru, has tried to avoid media attention and limited his participation to closed meetings. His absence from significant events is seen as a symbol of his gradual exit from the political stage.
