Solar activity is declining. What kind of geomagnetic storms can we expect in the coming days?

Strong magnetic storms are gradually receding, and starting from December 18, they will weaken to a green level. However, the situation may change due to a sudden solar flare.

According to data from the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) of NOAA, starting Wednesday, December 18, the activity of magnetic storms will fluctuate between levels 3 and 5.

Magnetic storms from December 18 to 20

On Wednesday, a slight solar activity is expected with a K-index of 3 (green level), which corresponds to weak magnetic storms. On Thursday, December 19, solar activity will also be low, maintaining a level of 3.

However, on December 20, forecasts predict even lower activity with a K-index of 2. Nevertheless, the situation can change rapidly, as solar activity is unpredictable. Therefore, researchers update their forecasts every three hours.

According to NOAA, moderate magnetic storms are expected until January.

As reported by astrophysicists from the space weather research site Spaceweather, three halo CMEs exploded on the far side of the Sun over the past week. This raises the possibility that the unseen spots will become more active.

It is important to note that geomagnetic activity is measured on a scale from 0 to 9. The planetary K-index is used for designation; if the value is 5 or higher, it indicates a strong magnetic storm.
