With Donald Tump returning to the White House, a new chapter in U.S.-China relations is unfolding on the global stage.
According to The Wall Street Journal, during his campaign, Trump, as in previous terms, made China one of the primary targets of his foreign policy. His statements ranged from harsh criticism to direct attacks on Chinese leader Xi Jinping. One of Trump's most notable plans is to impose a 60% tariff on all Chinese imports. This could exert significant economic pressure on China, widening the divide between the two nations.
At the same time, experts warn that such actions could negatively impact the American economy, which relies on inexpensive Chinese goods. However, there are potential benefits for Beijing from a possible Trump strategy that involves weakening American alliances. If Trump distances the U.S. from its traditional allies in Europe and Asia, China could seize this opportunity to bolster its position on the international stage.
"China could benefit if Trump weakens American alliances. A particularly painful issue for Beijing in recent years has been how the Biden administration has pushed partners in Europe and Asia toward a more confrontational stance against China," the publication states.
