Former U.S. President Donald Trump has made a new appointment, selecting 80-year-old retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg as a special envoy to resolve the war in Ukraine.
According to Reuters, citing Trump's statement on the social media platform Truth Social, he described Kellogg as an outstanding military leader and businessman who will help make America and the world safe again.
"Kellogg has had an exceptional military and business career, including serving in very important national security positions during my first administration. Together, we will ensure peace through strength and make America and the world safe again."
Kellogg, who served as Chief of Staff of the U.S. National Security Council during Trump's presidency, along with former head of the agency Fred Fleitz, developed the so-called "peace plan" for Ukraine. This plan involves freezing the front lines and making active efforts to compel Kyiv and Moscow to negotiate.
The main idea of the plan is a conditional agreement among the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia. Trump and Kellogg believe that to achieve peace, Ukraine would need to agree to a temporary cessation of hostilities in exchange for the prospect of increased American military support. However, if Moscow refuses to negotiate, the U.S. will increase assistance to Ukraine, which Kellogg believes will force Russia to agree to a compromise.
At the same time, Kellogg, like Trump, has expressed opposition to Ukraine's immediate accession to NATO, arguing that such a move could lead to further escalation of the conflict.
