The North Korean regime of Kim Jong Un, under a secret agreement with Russia, has dispatched the first wave of troops to Ukraine – around a thousand soldiers – with the aim of gaining practical combat experience.
Details of this agreement were revealed to The Wall Street Journal by a former Russian intelligence officer who is aware of the clandestine accords between the two nations. According to him, this group of North Korean soldiers is operating under supervision and receiving instruction on Russian tactics, which include conducting modern warfare using drones and artillery. This is extremely valuable experience for Kim Jong Un.
According to South Korean intelligence, the soldiers initially arrived in Vladivostok, Russia, where they were outfitted with Russian military uniforms. They were then distributed across various cities in the Russian Far East for training. Analysts suggest that these North Korean troops could serve various roles, from missile launch specialists to personnel in logistical support chains.
Benjamin Young, a nuclear security expert from Rand Corp, pointed out the potential risks and benefits for North Korea. He emphasized that neither training nor drills can substitute for real combat experience, which could provide the North Korean army with an advantage if military actions were to escalate on the Korean Peninsula.
At the same time, experts warn of the risks associated with the potential "ideological contagion" posed by North Korean soldiers being outside their country. Professor Fyodor Tertitsky from Kukmin University believes that North Korea risks losing control over its soldiers if they decide to surrender to Ukraine or flee.
A senior European intelligence official commented on the situation, noting that rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula could be advantageous for Putin. His strategy is to force the West to focus on multiple conflicts simultaneously, diverting resources and attention away from Ukraine.
