Chancellor Olaf Scholz insists on his position, fearing Germany's involvement in a direct conflict with Russia.
According to DW, Taurus missiles, which can penetrate bunkers and have a range of up to 500 km, could provide a significant advantage for Ukraine in its fight against Russian attacks. However, Scholz has stated that the use of this weapon could lead to unpredictable consequences.
Scholz's decision has sparked outrage among the opposition and even within his coalition partners. In particular, the "Greens" and the Free Democratic Party advocate for supplying Taurus to Ukraine. Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, a member of the FDP, has publicly urged the chancellor to reconsider his stance. The conservative Christian Democratic Union also supports the initiative. Meanwhile, within the SPD, Scholz's party, there is a consensus to block the supply.
The FDP, which has exited the coalition, plans to reintroduce the Taurus issue for a vote in the Bundestag. However, even if a decision is made, it will remain symbolic—the real authority lies with the Security Council, which is headed by Scholz.
The situation has become more complicated after U.S. President Joe Biden changed his position and allowed Ukraine to use American long-range missiles to strike targets in Russia. This decision was a response to the escalation of Russian attacks, as well as the mobilization of thousands of North Korean troops to support Russia.
