However, an unexpected obstacle arose on his path to the highest office — sharp criticism from Donald Trump's wife, the renowned journalist Anne Applebaum.

As reported by Politico, she has repeatedly labeled Trump a "threat to democracy" and compared him to past dictators. These statements have sparked outrage among politicians from the nationalist party "Law and Justice," who are attempting to use them to discredit Sikorski. Dominik Tarczyński, a Member of the European Parliament from "Law and Justice," stated that he has forwarded this material to Trump’s campaign team.

"I can confirm that Donald Trump's campaign has received all the materials containing negative statements about him," the politician said.

In response, Sikorski described such views from his opponents as treacherous and unworthy, emphasizing that his wife does not influence his political beliefs. He stressed that Poland has always been and remains a reliable partner to the United States, regardless of individual opinions.

Politico asked Applebaum for a comment regarding the impact of her statements on her husband's career, and here’s what she replied:

"The era when wives were considered an extension of their husbands is over. I do not play any role in this campaign or in my husband's work."

Sikorski's opponent is the liberal mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, who narrowly lost the 2020 presidential election to the current ally of "Law and Justice," Andrzej Duda. Preliminary polls indicate that Trzaskowski enjoys high popularity and is a favorite among voters. However, Sikorski's experience in diplomacy and his firm stance on Russia, along with support from figures like former president Aleksander Kwaśniewski, could prove decisive.
