Scientists continue to study Mars. Following the latest speculation about where the atmosphere of the "Red Planet" has gone, researchers have encountered a new mystery.
The NASA Mars Perseverance rover sent back images of mysterious green traces on the planet's surface. It captured greenish patches beneath the top layer.
The green patches are located in a unique area known as "Snake's Throat." The rover's drill removed a piece of rock, revealing white, black, and green inclusions in a spot about 5 cm in diameter. The most surprising discovery for scientists was the gray-green patches with a vague light green halo.
Such green patches on Earth can occur in several scenarios:
Scientists were unable to conduct further analyses, leaving the composition of the green patches on Mars a mystery. The team hopes to see the green patches again in the future for further investigation. In the meantime, the Perseverance rover is finishing its study of ancient rocks at the edge of Jezero Crater.
