In Kenya, a metallic fragment of unknown origin, measuring two meters in diameter, fell from the sky onto the settlement of Mukuku, located between the country's capital, Nairobi, and its largest port, Mombasa. Local residents are frightened and believe it to be a part of a UFO, while authorities claim it is merely a separation ring from a launch vehicle.
The incident was reported by the British publication Metro, citing local Kenyan media and sources. It is noted that the event occurred on December 30, and no buildings or living beings were harmed, aside from the terrified farmers.
"I was about to work when we heard this loud explosion… Then the metallic object fell and made another noise, scaring us," said one resident of Mukuku to a local news site.
"I heard what I thought was an explosion when it landed here! Boom! Boom! Boom! I asked, 'Is it the end of the world today?'… I was shocked because it was very sunny with no hint of rain. I hope our leaders will tell us what this object is and why it fell here," said another local resident.
Local inhabitants are both frightened and outraged by this incident. They assert that they will demand answers from the authorities.
"As a community, we are really concerned. What if it had fallen on someone's property? ... Are there companies in the sky that made this fall on us? We really need answers," declared another witness to the debris falling.
Meanwhile, local authorities believe there is nothing mysterious or terrifying about the incident. They assert that it was ordinary space debris – such incidents do indeed occur from time to time. The Kenyan space agency believes it to be a separation ring from a launch vehicle.
"Such objects are typically designed to burn up upon re-entering the Earth's atmosphere, or to fall over uninhabited areas, such as oceans," the agency stated in its report.
As reported, the fragment of Martian rock helped scientists clearly establish that there was once liquid water on the red planet.
