Negotiations with Russia regarding the war in Ukraine must involve Kyiv.

In a recent interview with CBS News, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris stated this. She emphasized that negotiations cannot take place without Ukraine's participation, asserting that "Ukraine must have a voice in determining Ukraine's future."

When asked about the possibility of meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Harris firmly responded that she would not agree to such a meeting. She believes that there can be no serious negotiations without Kyiv's involvement.

"On a bilateral basis without Ukraine – no," she noted, underscoring the importance of including the Ukrainian side in any peace talks.

Harris also pointed out that the U.S. is currently focused on supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. She reminded that during Donald Trump's presidency, the situation could have been much worse, as she stated, Putin could have freely "sat in Kyiv". The Vice President emphasized that Trump's statements about a quick resolution to the conflict are nothing more than a hint at capitulation.

Harris highlighted the necessity of adhering to the United Nations Charter in the context of the peace process. She believes that without Ukraine's involvement and the relevant international norms, there can be no talk of success in resolving the conflict. During the interview, Harris also expressed her views on Ukraine's potential NATO membership, noting that this issue should be considered in the future when the situation allows.

"Right now, we are supporting Ukraine's ability to defend itself against unprovoked aggression from Russia," she concluded.

Interestingly, according to recent polls, the presidential race between Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump remains very tight. According to an NPR/PBS/Marist poll, Harris holds a slight lead of 2 points among likely voters.
