The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, stated that the country is prepared to use military force in Syria if the overthrow of Assad's regime leads to its disintegration.
“We will never agree to the disintegration of Syria or the disruption of its unitary structure. If we perceive a risk in this regard, we will swiftly take the necessary measures,” Erdoğan declared at a press conference, as reported by Politiсo.
Turkey supports the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which opposes Bashar Assad's regime. This allows Ankara to exert a certain influence over the situation in Syria. However, one of Turkey's greatest threats is the presence of Kurdish forces, particularly the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which include the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). Turkey designates the YPG as a terrorist organization, linking them to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been fighting against Turkey for decades.
“The only fate that awaits those who choose terror and violence is to be buried in the ground along with their weapons. I say this openly; no authority will be able to prevent this,” Erdoğan emphasized.
These statements were reinforced by remarks from Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who noted that the eradication of the YPG is inevitable. Turkey has repeatedly conducted military operations in Syria, particularly during the civil war that began in 2011.
