The world's first wooden satellite, named LignoSat, was successfully launched into space aboard a SpaceX rocket on November 5, 2024. It was developed by researchers from Kyoto University. Once it arrives at the ISS, the satellite will be placed into orbit at an altitude of 400 kilometers above Earth.

Each side of the box-shaped experimental satellite measures just 10 centimeters. It is made from hinoki wood, a type of magnolia traditionally used in Japan for crafting sword sheaths.

LignoSat aims to demonstrate the potential of wood in upcoming lunar and Martian explorations. This eco-friendly satellite is designed to reduce space pollution. LignoSat will assess the durability of wood under harsh space conditions.

LignoSat will remain in orbit for about six months, during which it will collect data on how wood performs under extreme temperature fluctuations ranging from -100°C to 100°C. After the experiment concludes, it will burn up in the atmosphere. Wood in space is not exposed to moisture or air and is expected to perform significantly better than on Earth.
