Scientists are investigating the causes of the extreme heat on Earth, and the findings are concerning.

Recent years have been the hottest for the planet, with even harsh winters resembling spring. However, scientists are still not entirely certain why abnormal heat is so prevalent on Earth.

As noted by sciencealert.com, in the past couple of years, warming has taken on the character of a rapid surge in heat, which is difficult for scientists to explain.

They do not rule out the impact of fossil fuel combustion and the greenhouse effect, but this suggests a gradual warming over decades rather than an abnormal heat wave and corresponding climate changes.

Experts believe that this process may be accelerated by the coincidence of several factors, including changes in cloud structures, air pollution, and the Earth’s ability to retain carbon.

"The warming in 2023 has been significantly higher than any other year, and 2024 is expected to be the same,” — said Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, in November.

He mentioned that he does not know why this is happening, but NASA is on the way to solving this mystery. However, the changes in climate are already alarming people and worrying scientists.

When and why did the heat begin on the planet?

2023 followed a rare three-year La Niña phenomenon, which had a strong cooling effect on the planet by pushing excess heat into the deep oceans. This energy was released back to the surface when the opposite warming El Niño occurred in mid-2023, raising global temperatures.

However, the heat persisted even after the peak of El Niño in January. The temperature dropped slowly, and November was the second warmest on record.

"It is difficult to explain this at the moment,” — said Robert Wattard, a member of the UN IPCC climate expert group.

At the same time, he stated that if the temperature does not drop sharply in 2025, scientists will indeed have to find the cause of the abnormal heat.
