The stag beetle ( Lucanus cervus ) is one of the largest and most vulnerable insect species, once widely distributed across Europe. Today, this unique species faces serious threats leading to its potential extinction.

These insects play a crucial role in the ecosystem by aiding in the decomposition of organic materials and enhancing soil quality. However, if measures are not taken to protect them, we risk losing this species forever.

Features

Their "antlers" are actually highly developed mandibles used by males to fight during mating rituals. Males can grow up to 91 mm in length, while females are significantly smaller.

Primarily, the stag beetle feeds on plant sap. It can bite into young shoots in search of a tasty meal. The stag beetle also enjoys consuming nectar and dew.

Population Decline

Unfortunately, the population of the stag beetle is continuously decreasing. This species was once common throughout Europe, but due to the felling of old trees and a lack of natural habitats, its numbers have sharply declined. In Ukraine, the stag beetle is listed in the Red Book, indicating its risk of extinction.

Causes of Threat

The main factors contributing to the decline of stag beetle populations include deforestation. Widespread logging of old forests and sanitary "cleansings" destroy the beetles' habitats. Moreover, new tree plantations do not provide the necessary conditions for feeding and reproduction. Uncontrolled collection of beetles also negatively impacts their population.

Ecological Role

Stag beetles play an important role in the ecosystem. They feed on dead wood and tree sap, which aids in the decomposition of organic materials and improves soil quality. The larvae of the beetle develop in decaying trees for 4-8 years, serving as forest sanitarians.

Conserving the stag beetle is a vital task for biodiversity protection. It is essential to take measures to safeguard its natural habitat and ensure conditions for the recovery of this unique representative of Europe's fauna.
