The Ethiopian wolf (also known as the red jackal, Simien fox, or Abyssinian wolf) is an extremely rare species classified as endangered. It is found only in the Ethiopian highlands, with fewer than 500 individuals living in 99 packs.

Primarily, the wolf feeds on small animals, birds, or eggs; however, scientists have recently observed an unusual new interest among these animals in nectar. This nectar comes from a specific plant species, Kniphofia foliosa, which grows in the highlands where the wolves are found. The nectar is very sweet. Wolves from various packs have been spotted indulging in this nectar.

While searching for plants to consume nectar, wolves may also aid in the pollination of this species, researchers believe. In a single observation, wolves could visit up to 30 plants.

Moreover, adult wolves brought their pups to the flowers so they could also enjoy the nectar. Scientists have referred to the wolf as the "only large carnivorous predator ever observed feeding on nectar". Local human children also enjoy the nectar from these flowers.
